Abstract

Ultrasound is of value in differentiating articular from peri-articular pathology. Symptom correlation can be performed at the time of scanning. In articular disease, ultrasound is effective in the demonstration of subclinical synovitis. Erosions can be demonstrated in both small and large joints often at an earlier stage than radiographic erosion. Ultrasound guided diagnostic and therapeutic injections will probably be the most important role of ultrasound in rtheumatology.
