Abstract

Tendon disorders are common in the general population, affecting a variety of tendons in athletes and the shoulder rotator cuff in older individuals. The superficial nature of tendons coupled with the availability of high-frequency ultrasound transducers makes tendons amenable to a comprehensive sonographic examination. This article provides an overview of the prevalence of tendon disease, the pathophysiology of tendon disease, and sonographic techniques for tendon evaluation. A more detailed discussion of the sonographic evaluation of the shoulder and ankle tendons is also provided.
