Abstract

Abstract The temperature variation of ultrasonic velocity (V) and the specific volume (v) of mesomorphic p-(p-ethoxy phenyl azo) phenyl propionate (EPAPP) are reported. The ultrasonic velocity exhibits an anomalous behaviour at the nematic-isotropic phase transition and the specific volume shows a sudden jump indicating a first-order phase transition. The parameters adiabatic compressibility (βad), Rao number (molar sound velocity) (Rn) and Wada constant (molar compressibility) (B) are estimated and are found to exhibit an anomalous behaviour at the transition temperature. The thermal expansion coefficient (α) and the temperature coefficient of adiabatic compressibility (αβ ) are found to show an abnormal increase at the phase transition.
