Abstract

The density (p), viscosity (η) and sound veteclty (U) (2 MHz) of pure solvents: 1,40dioxane, methyl ethyl ketone (MEK) and N,N-dimethyl formamide (DMF) and solutions of 4,4'-biphenyl diacetate (BPDA) and 4,4'-dihydroxy-3,3'-diethanone biphenyl (DHDEBP) were determined at 30 °C. Various acoustical parmeters namely specific acoustical impedance (Z), isentrople compressibility (K s ) van der Waals constant (b), intermolecular free path length (L f ), internal pressure (π), free volume (V f ) and solvation number (S n ) were derived from p and U data and correlated with concentration (C). A fairly good to excellent correlation is observed between a specified parameter and C. Linear increase of U, Z, b and V f and linear decrease of κ s , L r and π confirmed Bresence of strong molecular interactions in the solutions. Both BPDA and DHDEBP possess structure forming tendency as confirmed by positive values of S n . Powerful solute-solute interaction is observed above 0.75 mol/L.
