Abstract

In order to increase our understanding and control of the quality aspects of aluminum in the molten state, Reynolds Metals Company has developed a pulse-echo ultrasonic system to make four ultrasonic measurements: discontinuity evaluation, relative changes in attenuation, longitudinal wave velocity, and spectrum analysis of reflected pulses. These measurements are made possible through the use of a specially designed probe which is immersed in the molten metal; the metal can be either in a quiescent or a dynamic (flowing) condition. The system has been applied to examine several conditions of molten alumimum quality, and it has been determined that it can detect improvements, as well as deleterious effects.
