Abstract

A commercial ultrasonic tester has been used to assess the application of ultrasonics in ceramic research and testing. It has proved possible to follow and assess frost damage in wall tiles. Limited success has also been achieved in the detection of faulty adhesion in tile panels. Young's modulus has been measured to better than 10%, and used to evaluate the variation of the strength of materials with firing temperature. The use of ‘dry-tip’ probes has made it possible to carry out quality-control tests on green (unfired) ware as well as the detection of flaws in fired articles. A range of experimental problems has been covered from water absorption in plaster to thermal shock damage in small ZrO 2 rods.
