Abstract

The kinetics of the proton transfer that occurs between pyridine and acetic acid in aqueous solution has been investigated using the ultrasonic relaxation technique. It has also been shown that this technique can monitor the same process involving acetic acid and the pyridine ring sidechain in poly(4-vinylpyridine) as well as poly(2-vinylpyridine). The rate constants associated with these processes have been evaluated and compared with those calculated for diffusion-controlled reactions. In the interaction between acetic acid and both polymers, it has been shown that the data can be satisfactorily described by assuming that the pyridine rings in the polymers are independent entities.
