Abstract
An experimental prototype of a commercial ultrasonic device for quality control of fired bases of PSP-96-type refractory plates for sliding gates of steel teeming ladles is presented. The device is based on the ultrasonic shadow method. It is demonstrated that ultrasonic monitoring efficiently reveals hidden cracks in the fired plate bases and reliably excludes the possibility that serviceable articles would be rejected.
