Abstract

Recent biomedical ultrasound development taking advantage of unique properties of ultrasound contrast microbubbles on ultrasonic molecular imaging, drug delivery and therapy has opened up powerful emerging applications. The intense radial oscillation of microbubbles makes them several thousand times more reflective than normal body tissues and emits significantly stronger acoustic signal. Besides, the oscillation resonance that microbubbles produce has several special properties that can be exploited to improve diagnoses and even for drug delivery and therapy. Moreover, selective ultrasound excitation can spatially-manipulate the microbubbles through the mechanism of acoustic radiation force and also destroy microbubbles to release the drug.
