Abstract

The authors have developed a device for monitoring and controlling the concentrations of transparent binary solutions and mixtures. Ultrasonic standing waves in the liquid act as a diffraction grating when light passes through them. The separation of fringes in the diffraction pattern is a function of the ultrasound velocity and hence of the concentration.
