Abstract

In the thirty years since US imaging became technically feasible, rapid progress is very recent and has occurred in the fields of obstetrics, cancer diagnostics and heart diagnostics. The advantages of US compared with X-ray methods are discussed and the two computerised methods of producing pulse-echo images by transducer scanning are described. Photographic records are presented illustrating a pregnancy, a liver tumour and a human heart exhibiting mitral stenosis.
