Abstract

Optical methods are often proposed for the precise determination of the energy density of an ultrasonic area. Several measurement techniques have been developed to yield certain optical parameters. However, the difficulty remains in interpreting the results in terms of the local parameters of the sound field. This paper reviews the basic concepts of ultrasonic light diffraction, the parameters used to describe these concepts, methods of measurement, and limitations on interpretation.
