Abstract

Measurements of the ultrasonic attenuation at 9 GHz have been made on the uniaxial Heisenberg antiferromagnet GdVO4. Resonant interactions between the ultrasonic and spin waves have been observed and explained in terms of coupling by single-ion magnetostriction. The total magnetoelastic coupling constant mod G11+2G12 mod was found to be 3.2+or-0.5 cm-1. Non-resonant attenuation has also been measured at the second-order phase transitions which occur in GdVO4 as a function of temperature and magnetic field, and this does not show the usual lambda -type behaviour.
