Abstract

SummaryOvarian follicular growth was studied by ultrasound scanning during the peri-ovulatory period in 16 ovulatory cycles in 8 infertile patients on cyclofenil treatment, and compared with a control group of 12 subjects during 18 spontaneous ovulatory cycles. The mean maximum diameters of the leading follicles before ovulation were 19.6×0.7(s.e.)mm and 22.0×0.6(s.e.)mm respectively for the cyclofenil stimulated group and the normal control group (P=0.02). In 75 per cent of the cyclofenil stimulated and 83 per cent of the spontaneous ovulatory cycles, ultrasonic ovulation occurred between 12 and 36 hours after the initial increase in urinary LH levels. Ultrasonic ovulation occurred on the day of the maximal cervical index or on the following day. Ultrasound scanning was found to be a useful guide to monitor patients on cyclofenil therapy.
