Abstract

The six second-order elastic constants of SrFCl, which is a crystal belonging to the matlockite family, have been measured using ultrasonic and Brillouin scattering techniques. The linear and volume compressibilities are deduced and compared with those of the isostructural compound BaFCl. An elastic Debye temperature Theta el is calculated and compared with other experimental (calorimetric) and theoretical (shell model) determinations. The elastic constants of SrFCl and BaFCl are compared with those of BaF2 and SrF2, because the matlockite structure of MFX crystals can be derived from the fluorine structure of MF2 crystals. Finally, these constants are also compared with those deduced from shell model calculation.
