Abstract
The sonication of silica gel in basic solutions of diols causes rapid breakdown of the inorganic polymer and the formation of monomeric silicon complexes. The triscatecholate complex Na 2[(C 6H 4O 2) 3Si] is formed cleanly and in good yield at room temperature. The germanium analogue Li 2[(C 6H 4O 2) 3Ge] may be formed similarly from GeO 2 but TiO 2 remains unaffected by ultrasound.
