Abstract

1. 1. We have determined the precision of an ultra-micro method for measuring the CO 2 content of blood and plasma (0.03 ml). The results company very satisfactorily with those obtained by Van Slyke's macro method: for a trained experimenter the difference is not more than 1 vol. % of CO 2. 2. 2. Three methods of withdrawing samples of cutaneous blood have been studied. For the estimation of CO 2 the technique that does not use mineral oil is preferable to the usual sampling under oil. In fact, on the one hand the brief contact of the blood with the air modifies only very slightly its CO 2 content, while on the other hand, when passed through mineral oil blood droplets lose CO 2.
