Abstract
Breakthroughs of high-capacity transmission technologies have been demanded. Obviously, one strong candidate is space division multiplexing (SDM) using multi-core fibers and/or few mode fibers. Recent progress in this area enabled >10Pb/s transmissions using multi(few)-mode multi-core fibers. However, using modes still increase the complexity of fiber properties measurements as well as the system configurations. One relatively straightforward way to increase space efficiency is increasing number of cores but this direction is limited by the cladding diameter. Here, we will report recent research trials and progresses to solve these trade-offs.
