Abstract

Ultrafine layered graphite was prepared by jet impinging apparatus to reduce the size of graphite. The results showed that graphite formed a unique assembled structure with more exposed gaps and defects. As the anode material for lithium ion batteries, the ultrafine layered graphite showed a lower diffusion resistance compared with traditional graphite. In addition, ultrafine layered graphite electrodes displayed a higher reversible capacity of 393 mAh g−1 compared to the 345 mAh g−1 of traditional graphite electrodes and offered better cycling performance, retaining 78% of the initial reversible capacity after 800 cycles at rate 5 C. This exciting discovery based on decreasing graphite particle diameter may provide some novel ideas for improving the performance of graphite electrodes.
