Abstract

The optical properties of metal nanoparticles have been the subject of intensive research due to the electric field enhancement associated with the excitation of surface plasmons (SP). These field enhancement effects determine the linear and nonlinear optical properties of the metal nanoparticles and can be used to manipulate the optical properties of molecules located in their near-field. The most prominent example is the dramatic enhancement of molecular Raman signals (surface enhanced Raman scattering (SERS).
