Abstract

Ultrafast all-optical switches are quite attractive for future optical communications and processing. For practical application, important issues are switching speed, repetition rate, and switching energy. We recently proposed a transient cross-phase modulation (T-XPM) all-optical switch. This switch utilizes a frequency shift induced by a transient nonlinear phase shift. The mechanism of the T-XPM all-optical switch not only provides ultrafast and highly efficient switching but also makes the configuration quite simple. We present ultrafast 200-fs switching and 1.5 Tbps demultiplexing, and high-repetition (10 GHz) in the operation of our T-XPM all-optical switch.
