Abstract

Mercury (II) is known for its severe hazardous and toxicological effects on human health and environment. Development of an electrochemical sensor is reported here for the detection of Hg2+ ions in aqueous medium using Thymine-Thymine mismatch of single stranded DNA conjugated with Cysteine on gold surface. The sensing characteristics were investigated by square wave voltammetry (SWV) method and the lowest concentration of 10 pM of Hg2+ is confirmed. The proposed sensor with such an excellent detectability may be used for environmental monitoring and the method may further be applied for development of ultrasensitive detection strategies.
