Abstract
The paper describes various design considerations of an ultra high speed long-haul WDM link. Power budget, optical signal to noise ratio (OSNR) budget and dispersion budget equations, based on loss and dispersion management, are derived. Different types of degrading effects related to polarization mode dispersion, non-linear effects and chromatic dispersion are discussed and resulting power penalties are given. A numerical problem is also presented in this paper.
