Abstract

On the basis of the curved modulation of refractive index (RI) on the spliced points, a highly sensitive fiber-optic liquid level sensor is fabricated by embedding a piece of double-hole elliptical-core eccentric fiber in single-mode fibers. Curved RI modulation enhances the high-order cladding modes coupling efficiency, which increases the light-material contact. The liquid level sensing characteristics of the structure show a ultra-high sensitivity of up to 0.712 nm/mm in the range of 0–24 mm with good linearity. The liquids with different RI are also demonstrated to have a sensitivity of 6.071 (nm/mm)/RIU. Meanwhile, the sensor exhibits strong stability and low temperature crosstalk.
