Abstract

We have synthesized Ti3O5Mo0.2Si0.4 (TOMS), a metal oxide material with enhanced electronic conductivity. We have previously demonstrated that this material is an ideal catalyst support for fuel cells. Pt/TOMS materials show enhanced activity towards the oxygen reduction reaction and remarkable durability. In this report we examined ways of enhancing performance by optimizing the wt% Pt deposited on TOMS and probing the influence of Pt loading on MEA performance. We have determined that the ideal wt% Pt on TOMS is ca. 20 – 30 wt%. Furthermore, improved mass-specific power densities can be achieved using lower Pt loadings of Pt/TOMS without sacrificing durability.
