Abstract
The exact ``quantum limit'' value of noise figure ofEDFA in the high gain regime at quasi-two-level pumping isdetermined on the base of the McCumber theory. It is shown that inthe unsaturated gain regime the ultimate spectral efficiency ofinformation transmission depends on host material of EDFA and canserve as a figure of merit for comparison of host fibers.
