Abstract

An earlier proposal for the ultimate capacity of driven piles in sand by Fleming et al, is modified to a closed-form procedure and extended to include explicitly the decreasing influence of vertical effective stress and pile slenderness ratio with progressive increase in the magnitude of these parameters. In formulating the proposal, the author has endeavoured to combine, in an appropriate way, fundamental theory, past research findings and the field measured results from a recently published extensive data set. A convenient procedure for interpretation of relative density from cone penetration test results is also presented. (A)
