Abstract

A 17-year-old black girl chemotherapy patient presented with right labial soreness which caused significant pain with ambulation. Examination revealed acute vulvovaginitis with a large area of ulceration and edema of the labia minora extending to the posterior fourchette. The ulcer was cultured and grew Staphylococcus aureus and Corynebacterium diphtheriae. The patient was treated with erythromycin with complete resolution of symptoms. The authors emphasize that ulcerative lesions of the genital region may be caused by a variety of infectious organisms. Therefore, accurate diagnosis requires the routine use of culture in all patients.
