The tsarist systems of science centralization in the past, mainly in St. Petersburg and Moscow, set the directions for research, which were then duplicated in the Soviet times. Similar systems were used in the former Austro-Hungarian Empire, where institutions and financial dependence on central authorities in Vienna and Budapest dictated the development of science. This was the case throughout the twentieth century; the monuments of the Christian East in central Europe were considered provincial.
