Abstract

When Ottoline Leyser was appointed as the chief executive of UK Research and Innovation (UKRI) in 2020, she acquired a front-row seat for some extraordinary events in United Kingdom and European politics. She took charge of UKRI-which was forged from multiple agencies to unify government-funded research in all fields-after Brexit and during a time of bold moves in the reorganization of science in the UK, continuous turnover in the UK government, and formidable challenges in coordinating with European science. She sat down with me for a candid talk about these matters and a refreshing willingness to explain the issues.
