Abstract

Purpose: In 2016, The National Institute for Health and Care Excellence (NICE) released their latest clinical practice guidelines (CPGs) for the management of low back pain (LBP) and sciatica. CPGs are systematically developed statements designed to provide a clear, evidence-based structure for the assessment and management of complex conditions such as LBP. Clinicians’ adherence to CPGs is not guaranteed. Knowledge and attitudes towards guidelines are key barriers to guideline implementation. Therefore, the aims were twofold, (1) To assess UK physiotherapists’ and student physiotherapists’ perceived and actual knowledge of the 2016 NICE guidelines for LBP and sciatica, and explore the relationship between perceived and actual knowledge within student and qualified physiotherapists.
