Abstract

The European chemical industry's turnaround, which began in the first quarter of 1996, will continue, but the U.K. will be behind the rest of Europe. This was the prediction of BP Chemicals' chief economist. Malcolm Mitchell, at the annual business outlook conference of the U.K.'s Chemical Industries Association (CIA) in London earlier this month. Growth will be strongest in the countries on the Continent, however, while that for the U.K. chemical industry will be only modest. Mitchell, who chairs CIA's Economics Committee, was picking up on the business outlook he presented in November in Brussels for the European Chemical Industry Council as chairman of its Economics Committee. His latest outlook: Industry will continue its improvement during 1998, although since he made his November presentation, the financial crisis in the Asia-Pacific region deepened.
