Abstract

Since 1982 UK Government have provided support to assist the development of international standards based on the ISO Basic Reference Model. A comprehensive set of these standards is in sight and there is a growing emphasis on implementations. In Europe a harmonisation programme is in progress to generate functional profiles, drawn from the international standards, to assist implementation and ensure compatibility. UK Government encourages implementation by supporting a programme of opportunity studies and demonstrators; by referring to suitable OSI standards in public procurement; and by making conformance with relevant OSI standards a mandatory condition in the new Value Added and Data Services licensing regime. Conformance tests are vital to verify implementations of OSI. To achieve true open interworking, as well as having international standards, it is equally important that these tests are internationally harmonised. The UK therefore supports the establishment of competent testing and certification arrangements and is actively seeking cooperation between the world's key players.
