Abstract

The valve side bushing of converter transformer is a key component in UHVDC (ultra-high voltage direct current) transmission system. Accurate computation of the electric field distribution under voltage polarity reversal is important to guarantee the safety operation of the bushing. Ansys Maxwell electric transient solver is used to study the electric field distribution of bushing under polarity reversal. The influence factors of electric field distribution in polarity reversal process are studied. When DC voltage is applied the electric field in materials is changed gradually proportional to the electric resistivity mainly due to the charge accumulation at the dielectric interface. During the polarity reversal process, the electric field in the material with lower resistivity increases, while the electric field in material with higher resistivity tends to decrease. The cumulative charge is the key factor affecting the electric field distribution during polarity reversal.
