Abstract
The article deals with the Balkans image in post-Yugoslavian prose. The inhabitants of the peninsula try to respond to the opinions and perceptions that are related to them, created by the Western European Balkanistic discourse. Negative ideas have become the cause of complexes, a sense of injustice and resentment. That is why the inhabitants of the Balkans are looking for a way to escape from the Balkan identity. Scientists, writers and publicists strongly oppose the invidious, one-sided image of the Balkans. They are trying to prove that it is not quite in consonance with reality, and that the process of shaping the image of the Balkans was influenced not only by the Balkan nations, but also by the West.

W następstwie wykreowane zostały negatywne i niekoniecznie zgodne z rzeczywistością stereotypowe wyobrażenia, które współcześnie stają się przedmiotem badań, dyskusji i dyskursów nie tylko naukowych, ale także literackich. Bałkany jawiły im się więc jako odległe pod względem geograficznym oraz kulturowym. Bałkany wciąż są postrzegane przez pryzmat zachodnich standardów cywilizacyjnych, a co za tym idzie – oceniane jako inne, mniej rozwinięte. Todorova analizuje problem postrzegania Bałkanów przez mieszkańców Europy Zachodniej, opierając się na pełnych negatywnych komentarzy źródłach i dokumentach z różnych epok. Stara się w ten sposób znaleźć historyczne oraz kulturowe przyczyny pejoratywnego wizerunku krajów bałkańskich na Zachodzie, aby ustalić, czy taka percepcja regionu jest uzasadniona i słuszna. Dyskurs bałkanistyczny odcisnął piętno nie tylko na sposobie, w jaki postrzegane są Bałkany na Zachodzie, ale też na świadomości samych mieszkańców regionu. Narody bałkańskie również przyczyniły się do utrwalenia takiego, a nie innego wizerunku regionu. Argumentów wykazujących związek z Europą Zachodnią i na nowo wyznacza się kryteria, które decydują o wykluczeniu poszczególnych narodów z obszaru Bałkanów
