Abstract

We analyze the HETGS Chandra and XMM-Newton X-ray spectrum of several type 1 AGNs (Active Galactic Nuclei) which harbor outflows: NGC3783, NGC3516, NGC7469, NGC5548, IRAS 13349+2438, and MCG -6-30-15. Absorption from almost all charge states of Fe are usually detected. This allows for a detailed reconstruction of the absorption measure distribution (AMD), which we define as the distribution of column density as a function of ionization parameter. We find a double peaked AMD for all the tested AGNs. All sources feature a deep minimum in column density consistent with no absorption from gas at temperatures of 4.5<log T<5 (K). We interpret the minima as observational evidence for thermal instability in this temperature regime. Observing this minima in all the objects we tested leads us to believe that could all AGN outflows have this thermal instability.
