Abstract

This paper introduces several key technologies for ubiquitous optical links which are to be deployed in access and residential broadband networks. These technologies cover array optical links and plastic optical fiber (POF) links. An array optical link was proposed for star topology FITL(Fiber In the Loop) systems, though it has been developed only for a parallel interconnection link in a large capacity switching system. Newly developed array optical link features large dynamic range and cross talk tolerance high enough for a FITL system with 7.2km CSA (carrier serving area). POF links have recently attracted much attention for use in low cost and broadband premises networks. This paper introduces high speed POF transmission technologies with improved red LED and SI-POF. Several application systems, such as Fast Ethernet and IEEE1394 home network, using the newly developed POF link are introduced. These technologies could gain the applicability of fiber optic links in residential broadband networks.
