Abstract

The reaction of I(CO) 2(PMe 3) 2WCNEt 2 (I), I(CO) 2(t-C 4H 9NC) 2WCNEt 2 (II) or I(t-C 4H 9NC) 3(CO)WCNEt 2 (III) with the strong methylating agent, CH 3OSO 2CF 3, was studied. In all cases elimination of CH 3I takes place, and leads to the yellow, neutral carbyne complexes (CF 3SO 3)(CO) 2(PMe 3) 2WCNEt 2 (IV), (CF 3SO 3)(CO) 2(t-C 4H 9NC) 2WCNEt 2 (V) and (CF 3SO 3)(t-C 4H 9NC) 3 (CO)WCNEt 2(VI) respectively. The composition and structure of the new complexes IV–VI, which contains a triflate ligand as a good leaving group, were determined by elemental analyses, IR, 1H, 13C, 31P, 19F NMR, and mass spectroscopy.
