Abstract

The sculptures featuring in the biennial outdoor Exhibition of Contemporary Japanese Sculpture, along with several outdoor sculptures on permanent public display, are discussed as public art and placing them in a historical and geographical context. The extensive planting of trees to counter the pollution created by the city's industrialisation over the years included the installation of sculptures to suit the slogan 'an industrial city of flowers and greenery' used to promote the city.
