Abstract

The last century saw the birth of the 'First Engine Powered heavier than air' aircraft flight by the Wright Brothers' and within fifty years air power became the key to supremacy in the war game. Today the focus has shifted to include 'Unmanned Aerial Vehicles'(UAVs). UAVs range from the 100 gram Micro-UAV to the High Altitude, Long Endurance and Unmanned Combat aircraft. Primary roles even today are 'Intelligence, Surveillance and Reconnaissance' (ISR) but 'Combat UAVs' are expected to come into operation within l5 to 20years. UAVs conceived originally as desirable low cost, 'eyes-in-the sky' are today key assets in the military tool kit. The paper focuses on some of the issues and technology challenges associated with UAVs and provides a glimpse into the DRDO road map for development of UAVs.
