Abstract

In situations when cellular networks go down, unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) can be utilized as wireless base stations. In this study, a single UAV has the role of a wireless base station and provides coverage for uniformly distributed users inside the building. We consider scenarios with different building sizes and we provide the solution to the problem of the efficient UAV placement and minimization of transmit power required to cover the entire building using the Animal Migration Optimization (AMO) algorithm. Experimental studies show that the AMO algorithm is able to obtain better results in finding efficient UAV placement than Particle Swarm Optimization (PSO) algorithm and Artificial Bee Colony (ABC) algorithm.
