Abstract

This research explores the underrepresentation of females in the areas of science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM) in higher educational programs with a focus on Emirati females. The UAE female student’s enrollments, graduate rates and employment in two of the largest UAE higher education institutions were analyzed to identify if Emirati female students’ pursue STEM education programs despite the social and psychological barriers, gender stereotyping, the lack of women in leadership roles and perceptions of the nature of STEM work challenges. In this research, a review of challenges related to female student’s experiences in STEM higher education programs and employment is deliberated, and the UAE economics needs and expectations of STEM education was considered. This research revealed that despite the challenges, the Emirati female students are still pursuing STEM education in the area, and their numbers outperform the men. The findings were related to the UAE government support, changes in the family and cultural dynamics and future job opportunities.
