Abstract
A novel ternary phase has been identified in the U-Pd-Ge ternary system with composition U13Pd47Ge25. Single crystal and powder X-ray diffractions indicate a cubic structure (space-group Im3¯, no. 204) with Ca13Au50Ge22-type, a derivative version of the YCd6 one. As expected in this structure-type, transmission electron microscopy evidenced a pseudo-5-axis along the [1¯τ0] zone axis, defining this compound as a Tsai-type quasicrystalline approximant. dc- and ac-magnetization, specific heat and electrical resistivity measurements highlight a spin-glass behavior for this uranium germanide, as well as a significant influence of the crystallographic disorder.
