Abstract

Abstract Ukko was a god of thunder, clouds, and rain, widely worshipped by the Finns and the most commonly evoked deity in the Finnish epic poem the Kalevala. Ukko replaced the earlier Finnish sky god Jumala as Supreme Deity and assumed a role similar to the Scandinavian Thor. Ukko, too, carried a hammer or, in some areas, a rainbow bow and a lightning arrow. With these weapons, he drove away evil spirits by sending thunder and lightning down to earth.
