Abstract

This paper presents the current (2006) U.S. state-of-practice for the design of the load transfer platform used in column supported embankments. Two design methods are in use in the U.S. today, the catenary and beam method. Both methods are presented, including the fundamental design assumptions that differentiate the two approaches. The paper also provides guidance on the determination of the geosynthetic properties for the load transfer platform based on the method used to design the platform.
