Abstract

Abstract This article discusses the results of technological and economic feasibility analyses of possible offshore fishing/ processing ventures employing U.S.‐flag fish‐processing plant‐ships (FPP) in the Alaskan groundfish fishery. On the basis of these analyses, the potential contribution of the demand for FPPs to the U.S. shipbuilding industry is assessed. A range of FPP operational concepts is addressed, from a simple catch‐transfer capability to an integrated fishing fleet support system. The concepts are evaluated in terms of technical feasibility, construction and operational cost estimates, available fishing effort, catch processing capability, and product marketability at the domestic market wholesale level. The implications of FPP system management functions and institutional considerations are also addressed.
