Abstract

The Department of Energy Organization Act of 1977 (DOE 1977) combined the Federal Energy Administration, the Energy Research and Development Administration, the Federal Power Commission, the nuclear weapons program, and portions of energy-related programs from other Federal agencies into a single agency, the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE). DOE’s goal is to promote the development and use of reliable, clean, and affordable energy in an environmentally responsible manner, and to maintain a comprehensive, national, strategic energy plan.
