Abstract
The strong coupling expansion of the U(∞) Wilson lattice gauge theory in any number of dimensions is reformulated in terms of a sum over free lattice surfaces with local internal structure. This is a confirmation of the equivalence of multicolour QCD and some free string theory. The 1/ N expansion is shown to be equivalent to the topological expansion in terms of these surfaces.
