Abstract

The role of tyrosinase (EC 1.10.3.1, o-di-phenol:02 sb> oxidoreductase) in melanogenesis is definitive in that it catalyzes the initial steps in melanogenesis. Nevertheless, factors controlling the degree of melanogenesis leading to the melanization of premelanosome (1) require further consideration. Among these factors are the effect of melanocyte stimulating hormone, premelanosome formation, substrate availability, the functional level of tyrosinase and the activity of inhibitors.
