Abstract

This chapter focuses on tyrosinase autoantibodies. Antityrosinase antibodies are found in the sera of patients with diffuse vitiligo, metastatic melanoma, and with melanoma and vitiligo. The autoantigen is tyrosinase itself, the enzyme that participates in melanin formation by both melanocytes and melanoma cells. The production of autoantibodies in both diseases is associated with the development of white patches on the patient's skin. Pseudo antityrosinase antibodies detected in the serum of patients with connective tissue diseases, including systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE) rheumatoid arthritis.
